International Mountain Day

Happy International Mountain Day. Today is a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of our mountains. Every year, as part of our partnership with 1% For The Planet, Wolven donates 1% of our annual revenue to organizations committed to protecting our planet and communities. In honor of International Mountain Day, we wanted to highlight our 1% for the Planet partner, GirlVentures. GirlVentures, a non-profit organization based in Oakland, CA is on a mission to inspire girls* (cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth and any girl-identified youth) to lead through outdoor adventure, inner discovery, and collective action.

Who Is GirlVentures?

The non-profit has a variety of programs that gets girls outside to explore identity, social justice, leadership, health, and the environment. Their girls have the opportunity to backpack, hike, kayak, and rock climb in the Northern California Wilderness. To ensure everyone can participate regardless of financial status, GirlVentures utilizes a sliding scale fee structure, and provides all gear, food, and transportation free of cost.

Transitions Program

A program we love (especially on International Mountain Day) is their Transitions program. The program is a 14 day expedition filled with backpacking, climbing, and rappelling/abseiling the Courtright Reservoir area of the Sierra National forest and John Muir Wilderness. During this 14 day course, students learn the importance of Leave No Trace Ethics and how to honor the connection between the natural world and people.
